The National Family Preservation Network (NFPN) is pleased to announce the release of a new family assessment tool and training package for use with a variety of services to families. The North Carolina Family Assessment Scale for General Services (NCFAS-G) joins the NCFAS (for intact families) and the NCFAS-R (for families that are reunifying). In a 2006 study, a Berkeley research group reviewed 85 assessment tools and rated the NCFAS and NCFAS-R highest for use in the child welfare system.
NFPN, in cooperation with Dr. Ray Kirk, worked with an integrated human services agency in San Mateo County, California, to develop an assessment tool that could be used with all agency programs. In addition to the original five domains of the NCFAS, the NCFAS-G adds the domains of social/community life, self-sufficiency, and family health for use of this tool with a wide variety of programs and for families with less severe needs and problems. The NCFAS-G was tested with a differential response program that diverts families from the child welfare system. The tool was found reliable and valid with this program. A full research report has been submitted for publication to a journal. A summary of the report is available on our Web site.NFPN has developed a training package to accompany the NCFAS-G. The package includes the following:
- License to use the NCFAS-G Scale
- NCFAS-G Scale and Definitions
- Case Example and Scale Ratings
- Video Training Guide
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Sample Case Plan and Forms to Develop Case Plans
- F.A.Q.
- Database CD (computerized version of scale) and Instruction Manual
Please note: there is one major difference involving use of the NCFAS-G scale from the previous versions of this family of scales. The NCFAS-G is copyrighted and requires purchase of a license, included with the price of the training package. The scale is not available to preview.
NFPN is eager to begin distribution of the NCFAS-G scale and training package and to gather additional data on reliability and validity of the scale for various programs. The cost for the training package is based on the number of staff that will be using the tool.
