Restore PSSF FundingThe Promoting Safe and Stable Families Program (PSSF) is the primary federal funding vehicle for family preservation and reunification. The PSSF funding is critical because it is the only designated source of federal funds available for preservation and reunification.Annual base funding for PSSF is $305 million a year plus an additional $40 million for grant-funded substance abuse programs and workforce initiatives. Discretionary funds for the current fiscal year have been cut by over 25%—from $89 to $63 million. Because the cuts take effect this year, it means that PSSF funded programs will likely have to cut their budgets to absorb the loss of funding. If your program receives any money through PSSF funds, then it will be affected by these cuts. Sen. Jay Rockefeller and Sen. Olympia Snowe have drafted a letter to the Appropriations Subcommittee requesting restoration of discretionary funds to the PSSF program. They are inviting all senators to sign onto their letter by the deadline of April 1. All of us can support this effort by calling our two senators’ offices in Washington, D.C., this week and leaving the following message: Please join Senators Rockefeller and Snowe by signing onto their letter requesting the Appropriations Subcommittee to restore PSSF discretionary funding. The deadline for signing onto the letter is April 1. This is a wonderful opportunity for our voice to be heard in support of family preservation and reunification. Let’s make good use of it by contacting our senators this week! Our mission is to serve as the primary national voice for the
preservation of families through Intensive Family Preservation and
Reunification Services (IFPS & IFRS). NFPN has developed a
comprehensive fatherhood initiative, because fathers are an integral
part of families. We believe that children deserve to remain safely with their families
when possible, and that all efforts must be made to reunite children
with their families, when it is safe to do so.
